A cataract is the gradual clouding of a normally clear eye lens. Because the light coming through the lens to the back of the eye is blocked, it causes blurred vision, glare and decreased reading ability.

This is similar to the lens of a camera becoming dirty or foggy, resulting in a hazy, distorted picture.Anyone, regardless of age, race or sex can develop a cataract. A first sign is occasional blurry or hazy vision, or when haloes appear around lights. Usually, it takes years for cataracts to develop, but as the lens clouds up it can impair one's ability to perform everyday tasks.
