When the eye does not produce enough tears to keep the eye comfortable it may cause dry eye syndrome. Tear production normally decreases as we age. Certain medications can also result in dry eye by reducing tear secretion. Tears are replaced by using eye drops called artificial tears. There are also methods used to conserve tears and to prevent tear evaporation.
