A deterioration of the blood vessels leading to the eye's retina is the chief vision problem associated with diabetes. This is called Diabetic Retinopathy and results in leaking blood vessels which lead to blurred vision, detached retina and blindness. The longer one has diabetes, the higher the chances of this condition appearing.

Fortunately, ophthalmologists can now use lasers to seal the leaking blood vessels and reduce vision loss. But early detection is critical. Those with diabetes should undergo a complete eye exam at least once a year.
